Dr. Timothy Fong, who co-directs the Gambling Studies program at UCLA, shares his insights and research, including how online prediction markets are quickly becoming patients’ first experience with gambling behaviors.

Despite sluggish population expansion in parts of Los Angeles County, several areas in the region, like Santa Clarita, saw dramatic growth. One area that could help establish it — youth sports. “Soccer has picked up where football as a youth sport has declined,” said Steve Bank, an expert in sports law at UCLA. “In football, people worry about concussions, and that kind of thing has made it more problematic over the years.”

Bharat Jayram Venkat, the director of the Heat Lab at UCLA, says his team studied ambient temperatures in food trucks and found that the metal structures take on outside heat throughout the day, while also producing heat in small spaces. Many trucks did not have air-conditioning, Dr. Venkat said, and if they did, it was sometimes ineffective at cooling down the space.
