Multiple factors, rather than just temperature, contribute to a person’s thermal burden, or the amount of heat their body carries, said Bharat Venkat, a medical anthropologist and director of the UCLA Heat Lab. Humidity is a critical one — since muggy air can hold less moisture, the sweat on a person’s body doesn’t evaporate as swiftly, he said.

UCLA Design Media Arts alum Daniel González ’14 just made a little history — on a very large scale. The Chicano graphic artist and Los Angeles-based printmaker created “Luceros y Penumbras,” officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest pop-up book.
Created with paper engineer Matthew Reinhart for the Los Angeles Central Library’s centennial, the monumental book measures 31 by 20 feet when open, with pop-up elements rising more than 11 feet. González drew on his own memories of Los Angeles to create an ode to the city, knowledge and imagination. See it in the Central Library rotunda through mid-November.
