The spring digital issue of UCLA Magazine is out, and for the first time, we’re debuting a short documentary that follows the UCLA Climbing Team, a group of daring Bruins who are bonded together by their love of scaling new heights. From various backgrounds and majors, these students are a microcosm of the student population. But they all have one particular thing in common: a desire to climb.

As I shared on Sunday, we recognize that federal immigration enforcement actions can bring feelings of tremendous uncertainty and anxiety to our community. We want our immigrant and international UCLA students, staff and faculty to know we support your ability to work, learn, teach and thrive here. Read my message and view UCLA’s federal updates web page for the latest information.

California isn’t recycling nearly enough water, according to a new report by UCLA researchers, who say the state should treat and reuse more wastewater to help address the Colorado River’s chronic shortages. Analyzing data for large sewage treatment plants in seven states that rely on Colorado River water, the researchers found California is recycling only 22% of its treated wastewater. That’s far behind the country’s driest two states: Nevada, which is recycling 85% of its wastewater, and Arizona, which is reusing 52%.

Apply for new global research and global education awards
The UCLA Global Advisors Council invites faculty and academic staff proposals that 1) advance globally engaged research or 2) internationalize the UCLA curriculum. The Global Research Award offers seed research and global research grants for projects that bridge campus communities and collaborators abroad (see RFP and application form). The Global Education Award funds initiatives to integrate international perspectives into UCLA courses through grants to revise a current course; design a new course; or design a new program, concentration, or track (see RFP and application form). The application deadline for both awards is May 15, 2025.

The annual Yummy Bowl fundraiser returns for a fourth year from the department of Art in the School of the Arts and Architecture. The Yummy Bowl Benefit represents a unique way in which members of the UCLA community can support one another — by selling beautiful, functional ceramic bowls made by student and faculty ceramicists. Proceeds go directly to critical services, raising both funds and awareness for UCLA’s Community Programs Office Food Closet. Donate now at the Sparc campaign, then come to the Broad Arts Center on May 7, pick out a one-of-a-kind bowl and enjoy a meal from chef and artist Minh H Phan, a 2021/2022 Michelin Star recipient and 2021 L.A. Times restaurant of the year for PHENAKITE.
