Whenever you find yourself thinking of a friend, call them, said Jaimie Krems, director of the UCLA Center for Friendship Research. She does this even if she only has five minutes, and even if it feels totally out of the blue. “Instead of thinking, ‘Oh, I should call them’ and putting it on my to-do list, I just do it,” Dr. Krems said.

A year after the fires, scientists are trying to understand the fallout — what chemicals got left behind, how to remediate them and the threats to our health. UCLA environmental scientist Yifang Zhu, who is at the forefront of this research, talks about her findings.

Some people just really enjoy pushing molecules out of their comfort zones. Professor Neil Garg and his team at UCLA proudly count themselves among those people. Their latest work explores the chemistry of cubene and 1,7-quadricyclene, two molecules with extremely distorted double bonds. It’s “pushing the limits of what geometric distortion looks like,” Garg says.

It’s the annual World Café event, presented by UCLA’s Dashew Center, Wescom Financial and ASUCLA. The Dashew Center is a resource hub that supports international students as they navigate UCLA. It also aims to serve the entire UCLA community by promoting the values of creating global connection, international understanding and cultural sensitivity. The center annually publishes “Envelope: Art & Writing Magazine,” which highlights creativity and artistry from across our student population.
