Emerging research suggests that the communities of bacteria, viruses and fungi that make up our body’s microbiota can influence our sleep. “The predominant theory for a long time has been that having sleep disorders is disruptive to our microbiomes,” says UCLA professor of medicine Dr. Jennifer Martin. “But some of the evidence we’re seeing now indicates that it’s probably a relationship that goes in both directions.”

That’s because unlike existing treatments like minoxidil and finasteride, which merely slow down hair loss, PP405 sparks new hair growth. “PP405 wakes up dormant hair follicles, so the mechanism is very different,” says Heather Christofk, a biochemist at UCLA, whose lab helped develop the molecule.

UCLA geophysics professor Meng Lingsen dismisses the idea that cloud formations are indicative of future earthquakes. “Earthquakes are driven by processes deep within the Earth, not by phenomena in the atmosphere, so surface observations of clouds are not a dependable indicator of earthquake occurrence.”

This Sunday, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco will host a 30th anniversary screening of “Superflip,” a short film by UCLA’s newest arts leader Celine Parreñas Shimizu, dean of UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. The 30-minute film explores the life, love and labor of a Filipino immigrant couple and was shot in iconic South of Market locations, including original Carmen’s Restaurant, Blanche’s Garden, Rigo’s Inner City/Home mural and 330 Ritch/Victory Hall, San Francisco landmarks that have changed dramatically due to the pandemic and the impact of the tech business.
