A study by the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation found that particulate matter from wildfires can be more harmful to human health than from other sources. There were at least 52,480 premature deaths attributed to exposure to the inhalable particulate matter from wildfires, and at least $432 billion in health expenses associated with the exposure, according to the study.

Now in its 15th year at the Hammer, Bloomsday is a worldwide annual celebration of James Joyce and his landmark book, Ulysses. This lively celebration features a cast of veteran actors delivering dramatic readings from the novel interspersed with songs, followed by festivities in the museum’s courtyard with live music and Guinness on tap. Admission is free.

The Fowler Museum is teaming up with LA Commons to offer art-making and more at this annual event, which celebrates the rich traditions of the African Diaspora by honoring ancestors. Art activities will draw on themes of Yoruba spirituality brought to life in the Fowler’s 2023 exhibition of Yoruba Sacred Arts. Event is free and runs from 12-6 p.m.; the Fowler’s art-making station will be open from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Graduating students’ artistic achievements are recognized by the Chancellor’s Council on the Arts. Six students received honorable mentions, with projects ranging from a full-length album and short films to an evening-length choreographic group performance that reimagines Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations.”
