Researchers at UCLA wanted to find out which animals thrive and which struggle in urban environments. So they combed through years of iNaturalist data in the L.A. metro area and developed an “urban tolerance score” for 511 animal species. This score, which incorporates data such as light and noise pollution from different sections of the city, is a factor tied to those species’ level of tolerance to the local environment.
