UC-sponsored Senate Bill 895, the California Science and Health Research Bond Act, would have given Californians a chance to vote for a $12 billion research bond providing dedicated revenue to support UC research. Unfortunately, the date by which measures typically need to be placed on the ballot passed with no official legislative action. UC will continue to advocate for essential research investments from the state. Read President Milliken’s message to the UC community.

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget is considering major changes to the rules that guide federal research funding. Known as Uniform Guidance, these rules affect how grants and cooperative agreements are reviewed, awarded, managed and overseen. If finalized as proposed, the changes could make it harder for UC researchers to compete for federal grants, publish their findings, attend important research conferences and keep long-term projects moving forward. Visit UC Net to learn more about actions you can take to help.

Refik Anadol — MFA ’14 from UCLA’s Design Media Arts department, part of the School of the Arts and Architecture, where he’s also a longtime lecturer — has opened DATALAND, billed as the world’s first Museum of AI Arts, inside Frank Gehry’s Grand LA complex in downtown Los Angeles.
The anchor piece, Infinity Room (pictured above), started as a student project: Anadol built it during his second year at UCLA and first showed it at the Broad Art Center in 2012, under professors Jennifer Steinkamp, Casey Reas and Christian Moeller. Since then, the piece has toured 35 cities and drawn more than 10 million visitors; the DATALAND version is its most ambitious iteration yet. The museum’s inaugural exhibition, Machine Dreams: Rainforest, turns ecological data — gathered with the Smithsonian and Cornell Lab of Ornithology — into immersive, AI-generated environments, and even weaves in the final recorded call of the extinct Kauaʻi ʻŌʻō bird.
