Head coach Cori Close, the Big Ten Coach of the Year, praised the senior-led team, explaining that their overall mindset helped bring them to this moment. “All year, we’ve been saying the talent is our floor but our character will determine our ceiling,” she said. “I’m just so confident in their character, and that’s what determined how they played today.”

Near Earth, there are likely more than 25,000 asteroids large enough to level a city, according to recent estimates from NASA, which is now using a telescope called the Near-Earth Object Surveyor to detect infrared light or heat being emitted by elusive asteroids and comets. NEO Surveyor will be able to spot 140-meter asteroids that are about as far away as the Earth is from the Sun — much further than telescopes can currently see, said UCLA professor Amy Mainzer, the leader of the mission.

What did Mozart actually hear when he played? What can we learn about Schubert by hearing his works performed on different pianos? At the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, new faculty member Mike Lee explores these questions through both the modern piano and its predecessor, the fortepiano. While similar in shape, the fortepiano produces a lighter, more transparent sound, with a quicker decay that gives each note distinct clarity — reshaping how familiar works are heard. An internationally recognized keyboardist, Lee performs on instruments modeled after those of the 18th and 19th centuries, inviting students to consider how history, technology and interpretation intersect.
