This day offers a special moment for us to recognize those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, celebrate these heroes for their bravery and achievements and thank them for their sacrifices. Over the Veterans Day holiday weekend, I encourage members of our community to reflect on the service of our Veterans and to express appreciation to those they know personally. Read my message.

UCLA researcher David Walker has investigated the role of actin in brain aging and found that when F-actin accumulates in the brain, it hinders cellular cleanup and leads to the buildup of waste that decreases neuronal functioning and contributes to cognitive decline. However, they also found that tweaking some genes in fruit flies prevented the build-up of F-actin and extended the flies’ healthy lifespan by around 30%.

The 30th anniversary celebration of pop culture magazine Giant Robot, presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities, got off to a cracking start last weekend with sold-out crowds enjoying a screening of the 1996 Hong Kong-based film Chungking Express and a PBS mini-documentary about the eclectic magazine founded by UCLA alum Eric Nakamura. In its early days, the mag served as a vehicle for Nakamura and co-editor Martin Wong to write about the stuff they liked — from Hello Kitty to L.A.’s Cambodian-run donut shops. They were on hand for a Q&A and there is more in store this month with a delightful array of films at the Billy Wilder Theater, co-curated by Nakumura.
