“We’ve known for a long time that California is a very powerful economy. We have 40 million people. We have very productive workers and we have some unicorn businesses that have started here and continue here, such as Apple and Google,” said Lee Ohanian, an economics professor at UCLA.

Conflict is “inevitable and normal in intimate relationships,” said Andrew Christensen, a distinguished research professor at the UCLA department of psychology. But the way that couples manage it is a key to a healthy bond, he added. There’s a productive way to deal with conflict — attacking the problem rather than each other, for example — and an unhelpful way that fails to resolve the fight or makes it worse.

Itzhak Fried, a UCLA neurosurgeon and lead author of newly published research on time and space cells in the brain, has been at the forefront of major discoveries in this field. Over the past two decades, his lab, and the postdoctoral researchers trained there, have contributed significantly to our understanding of specialized neurons, including concept cells, that help encode and represent how we experience the world.
