UCLA Film & Television Archive’s Science Fiction Against the Margins series showcases filmmakers who occupy the “margins” of mainstream cinema in order to challenge and subvert the scifi genre. Joining in person next Friday are artist and UCLA Professor Cauleen Smith and UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television Associate Professor Shelleen Greene, presented in partnership with the UCLA Alumni Association. Admission is free; no advance reservations required; seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Led by Refik Anadol, UCLA alum and lecturer in the School of the Arts & Architecture’s Department of Design Media Arts, DATALAND will unite pioneers in diverse fields including the arts, science, AI research and cutting-edge technology under the artistic leadership of Refik Anadol Studio. With its flagship location launching in 2025 at The Grand LA downtown, DATALAND will join the renowned visual and performing arts institutions in the city’s cultural and civic corridor.
Anadol has emerged as a leader in AI and data-driven artmaking. He has two works in the current PST Art initiative from Getty, both of which use AI to create pieces from data-rich photography archives. He also provided a work titled Machine Simulations: Nature for UCLA’s “Moment of Reflection” event in 2022.
