“The dominant arm isn’t more capable because one hemisphere of the brain is simply better at controlling movement,” says study co-author Ahmet Arac, a neurologist at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “It is because we’ve spent a lifetime practicing the specific, complicated movements that tools and handwriting demand. Take away that practice by switching to a body part like the elbow that’s never done the task before and the advantage disappears.”

Did you know that the Hammer Museum is home to an astonishing collection of works on paper that began at UCLA long before the museum existed? Established in 1956 with a gift of prints from L.A. collector Fred Grunwald, the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts has evolved into one of the nation’s foremost collections of works on paper.
Over decades, the Grunwald Center’s holdings have expanded through donations and acquisitions, and now boasts more than 45,000 prints, drawings, photographs and artists’ books dating from the Renaissance to the present. On view now at the Hammer is the second part of an exhibition dedicated to showcasing this collection, including Edvard Munch’s “On the Waves of Love” (pictured above). In 2023, when the Hammer Museum unveiled its updated spaces, it included a new state-of-the-art reading room for the Grunwald Center, which is open by appointment for individual and class visits.
