Foundations and Futures, written by more than 100 leading scholars, journalists, organizers and community historians, features an extensive archive of videos, photographs, audio clips, poems and interviews, plus ready-to-use lesson plans for students in high school and college. “I wondered what it would look like if we democratized the research and reached the general public using accessible technology,” said Karen Umemoto, Asian American studies professor and the director of the Asian American Studies Center.

It needs to be “the best way to get around,” said Brian Taylor, a professor of urban planning and public policy at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs and a research fellow at the university’s Institute of Transportation Studies. That becomes the case, he said, when the rail line is convenient, timely and consistent, while driving becomes less attractive: Interstate traffic remains a challenge, parking options are expensive or limited and fuel prices remain high.

Art deco motifs, fossils and massive drawings of hands are among the installations that will greet riders passing through the three new stations on L.A. Metro’s D Line extension. The underground subway stations, which connect downtown L.A. to Beverly Hills — and will eventually stop at UCLA — are home to nine site-specific artworks, including three by UCLA alumni: Eamon Ore-Giron, Karl Haendel and Susan Stilton.

It’s that time of year. Student recitals, capstone performances and exhibitions are happening across the arts. At the Herb Alpert School of Music, a very special moment will bring selected K-12 students from across Los Angeles to Schoenberg Hall for the Gluck End-of-the-year Concert on March 22. The performers will come from the school’s Gluck Fellows music outreach program, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. These students perform in chamber ensembles or as solo artists, offering free educational performances across a diversity of musical styles at more than 150 schools, libraries, senior centers and other nontraditional venues throughout L.A. County. The program is generously supported by the Max H. Gluck Foundation and serves as a performance opportunity for students — and a calling card of UCLA excellence.
