In a clinical trial co-led by UCLA, an investigational gene therapy has successfully restored immune function in nine children treated for a rare and life-threatening immune disorder called severe leukocyte adhesion deficiency-I.

“This extraordinary gift expands our ability to educate the next generation of nurse leaders and faculty, those who will care for people across their lifetimes and help fulfill UCLA’s mission to improve lives through education, service and innovation in health,” Chancellor Julio Frenk said.

UCLA researchers have successfully grown miniature lungs from stem cells — complete with their own functioning blood vessel networks, opening the door to potentially growing other vascularized organ models that can provide unprecedented tools for studying diseases, testing drugs and developing personalized treatments.

A colorectal cancer screening trial found that testing uptake increases when people are mailed stool tests by default, versus when they are asked if they want a test or a colonoscopy. “We probably shouldn’t be wasting time asking patients first; we should send them what they need,” said Dr. Folasade May, the trial’s senior author and a gastroenterologist at UCLA. “We have a long way to go.”

“Pretty much anybody in Los Angeles can go outside and walk around,” said Sarah Roberts, a UCLA associate professor and internet culture expert. Roberts sees the trend as a reflection of broader social forces, including medical mistrust and the rising cost of health care and fitness. “We’re in a moment of economic uncertainty,” she said. “For most people, a $300-a-month membership at Equinox is not a reality.”
